The city of Boston has hired its second-ever Chief Digital Officer. Jeanethe Falvey will replace outgoing Chief Digital Officer Lauren Lockwood who is relocating to the Philadelphia area with her family. Lockwood announced her resignation earlier this summer.

Falvey brings more than 10 years of experience in web communications and digital strategy, she was most recently head of digital strategy at the National Geographic Society.

Some of Falvey’s most notable work includes the resurgence of Documeria and creation of State of the Environment, which are both platforms that use public photos to showcase changes in the country’s environment and human health conditions since the 1970s. Documeria was initially started by the EPA shortly after its creation. Falvey’s work digitized the project and created new interest in environmental photojournalism.

In addition, Falvey served on the core response teams during the BP Oil Spill and Hurricane Sandy, and led community outreach and engagement in the New England region for several environmental cleanup projects including those in New Bedford, South Weymouth, and the Massachusetts Military Reservation.

In her new role, Falvey will be tasked with overseeing Boston’s growing portfolio of digital services including the 311 system, open data portals, and smart city initiatives.
