Birch Communications has expanded its broadband service area by over 60%, adding some 14 states to its network. The company provides enterprise grade network and cloud services in addition to subscription broadband services.

The broadband service provides speeds of up to 24Mbps.

The network now covers 14 states adjacent to the northern Tier, Rockies and Pacific Northwest. Birch Communications is based in Atlanta, Georgia. With the expansion, the network is now available in 36 states, providing subscribers options beyond AT&T, Verizon and Comcast.

The company is engaged in an aggressive fiber network buildout strategy, especially when compared to the artificial network scarcity created by the big three. Birch most recently expanded networks in Los Angeles and the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Birch is also acquiring smaller providers to add to its business capabilities. The company acquired Atlanta-based Cbeyond last year, in an all-cash transaction valued at $323 million.

Cbeyond provides managed technology services, and the acquisition is part of a broader plan by Birch to create a nationwide network.
