The White House is releasing its new budget proposal through GitHub and other open data sites. In a blog post announcing the budget yesterday, acting Digital Strategy Director Nathaniel Lubin said the full budget proposal is being released in machine-readable format.
The White House is offering its budget in this way in order to allow those interested in data visualizations and other data-driven projects to use the budget in their work.
In addition the White House has released in-depth audio and text around individual parts of the budget experts commented on health, education and how the budget is constructed. The release of the budget coincides with the president’s state of the union address.
As CivSource reported, President Obama took the unusual step of rolling out his priorities ahead of the speech with a series of trips throughout the US. His trip to Iowa highlighted his support for municipal broadband, other stops highlighted education and the economy.
