Ohio receives awards for broadband plan

Chillicothe, Ohio is gaining national recognition for it’s regional broadband expansion plan. The plan is managed by local company Horizon Telcom and gained two awards for it’s innovation. The project is the Connecting Appalachia Middle-Mile Fiber Optic Network.

The 2011 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations Research Foundation was presented to the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission, Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association and Buckeye Hills Hocking Valley Regional Development District for their work implementing the plan.

The project is a partnership between Horizon and the BTOP round of funding which is focused on filling middle mile coverage gaps in rural areas throughout the United States. This project will provide broadband Internet in 34 rural Ohio counties linking up anchor institutions including healthcare providers, schools and public offices. The project received the awards for it’s innovative network plan which will expand overall coverage and increase the economic competitiveness of Ohio.

The project is the work of the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission which is a regional planning commission that coordinates various federal, state and local resources to encourage development in Ohio.
