Maryland upgrades court system

Maryland has chosen Tyler Technologies to integrate its court management system using the Odyssey(R) solution. The Odyssey court management system will integrate managing and reporting court information in order to help the state meet its Maryland Electronic Court (MDEC) goals. The state court system is working to upgrade and streamline many of its legacy systems.

The Federal Communications Commission is staking out a rough position on broadband. The commission is considering capping broadband funds while simultaneously promoting broadband expansion nationwide. The vote would cap funds for rural broadband available through the Universal Service Fund.

Chillicothe, Ohio is gaining national recognition for it’s regional broadband expansion plan. The plan is managed by local company Horizon Telcom and gained two awards for it’s innovation. The project is the Connecting Appalachia Middle-Mile Fiber Optic Network.

Illinois, Minnesota to see expanded broadband

Illinois and Minnesota are moving forward on expansions to their in-state broadband networks. Frontier Communications recently expanded its service offerings to several Illinois communities including eight cities in deep southern Illinois. Additionally, Paul Bunyan Communications was awarded a $17 million dollar loan from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to expand its services throughout Minnesota.

Florida broadband projects under scrutiny

Florida is facing an investigation of its broadband expansion plan. The federal government has suspended a $30.1 million grant award to the North Florida Broadband Authority amidst allegations of poor supervision of the project and waste. Work has already been stopped on the project which was set to bring high-speed broadband to 14 Florida counties.
